Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan, GCFR, GCON, is a Nigerian politician who served as the President of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015. He was born on November 20, 1957, in Otuoke, Nigeria. Before his presidency, he held various positions such as the Governor of Bayelsa State (2005-2007), Vice President of Nigeria (2007-2010), and Acting President of Nigeria (2010).

Goodluck Jonathan was born on November 20, 1957, in Otuoke, a village in Bayelsa State in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. He came from a modest family. His father was a canoe maker and his mother was a farmer.

Jonathan was raised in a Christian family and attended Christian primary and secondary schools.

Despite his modest background, Jonathan excelled in his studies. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology (second-class honors) from the University of Port Harcourt in 1981. He further pursued academic excellence by obtaining a Master’s degree in Hydrobiology and Fisheries Biology in 1985 and a Doctorate in Zoology in 1995, both from the same university.

During his time at the university, Jonathan also pursued a teaching career. He served as a lecturer at the Rivers State College of Education from 1983 to 1993.

Jonathan’s political career began in the late 1990s when he joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He was elected deputy governor of Bayelsa state in 1999 and later became governor in 2005. After Yar’Adua’s death in 2010, Jonathan became the acting president and was later sworn in as president.

The couple has two children:

  • Ariwera Jonathan: Their son, Ariwera, was born in 1983. He is a graduate of the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom and holds a Master’s degree in International Business Management from Imperial College London. Ariwera is married and has children.
  • Aruabai Jonathan: Their daughter, Aruabai, was born in 1988. She is a lawyer and also holds a Master’s degree in Law from Harvard University. Aruabai is married and has children.
