Sharmila Tagore is a famous Indian actress who has worked in both Hindi and Bengali films. She is also the great-granddaughter of poet Rabindranath Tagore.

She was married to cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and has three children, Saif, Soha, and Saba, who are also involved in the film industry.

Sharmila Tagore was born on 8 December 1944 in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, to Gitindranath Tagore and Ira Baruah. She is the great-granddaughter of poet Rabindranath Tagore.

She spent some years of her childhood in Kolkata, where she attended Loreto Convent School and St John’s Diocesan Girls Higher Secondary School. She was offered to work in films at the age of 13 by director Satyajit Ray, who spotted her in a school play.

She was not good at studies and faced a choice of either doing films or studying further. She chose to pursue a career in acting and made her debut in Ray’s The World of Apu (1959). She went on to work with Ray in several other films, such as Devi (1960) and Nayak (1966).

Tagore collaborated with Ray on several other films, including “Devi,” “Nayak,” “Aranyer Din Ratri,” and “Seemabaddha.” She is esteemed as a prominent figure in Bengali cinema.

Sharmila Tagore married the famous Indian cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi in 1968 and converted to Islam. She took the name Begum Ayesha Sultana after her marriage. She has three children with Pataudi: Saif, Soha, and Saba. Saif and Soha are well-known actors in Bollywood, while Saba is a jewellery designer.

Sharmila also has four grandchildren: Sara, Ibrahim, Taimur, and Inaaya. She was widowed in 2011 when Pataudi passed away due to a lung infection.
